Lunch Is On Me

I tagged along to lunch with a friend and his client. Then the client explained why he was happy to pay.

Once upon a time, I tagged along to lunch with a friend and his client. We were both software engineers; my friend was building some things for him. Mid-meal, a line slipped out of the client’s mouth:

“I’m happy to pay for their lunch, no problem…”

I thought he was just being nice. Then he kept going:

“Have it brought to their desks, so they don’t get up to eat and they keep working…”

“I’d even put a toilet there, so they don’t get up for anything.”

To me it was utter nonsense, in many ways. But he meant it.

My friend and I just looked at each other, in silence.
